Volkswagen’s Data Breach: Stolen Files and Targeted Attacks on Alternative Drive Technologies

Thousands of files stolen in long-term VW hack

Volkswagen has been the subject of hacking attempts over several years, with thousands of files stolen by attackers. The car manufacturer confirmed this information on Saturday, although a spokesman declined to provide further details when asked. However, it was reported that the incident took place around ten years ago and was recently brought to light by Spiegel and ZDF, citing internal VW documents about the cyber attacks.

According to media reports, the attackers were targeting information related to “petrol engine development,” “transmission development,” “dual clutch transmission,” and alternative drive technologies such as electromobility and fuel cells. It is estimated that up to 19,000 files were taken between 2010 and 2014 or 2015. In response to suspected connections to China, the Chinese embassy in Berlin condemned any form of cyber espionage.

Volkswagen has emphasized the importance of digital security in protecting their systems, processes, and products both in the past and present. A spokesperson stated that they are continuously working to ensure the security and functionality of their IT landscape, products, and digital ecosystems. This includes adopting new technological solutions and maintaining open communication with partners, associations, and authorities.
