Virginia Teachers Recognized as Finalists for Prestigious Presidential Award in Mathematics and Science

Arlington science educator nominated for prestigious White House recognition

Laurie Sullivan, a Project Discovery science/STEM teacher at Arlington’s Barrett Elementary School, has been named as one of the finalists for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This award is considered the top honor for K-12 teachers working in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

Two other educators from Virginia were also named finalists for the award. One of them is from Goochland County while the other is from Martinsville. These finalists were selected by review committees organized by the Virginia Department of Education.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons expressed pride in recognizing and honoring the three Virginia teachers who have been chosen as finalists. She stated that they will represent the commonwealth in the national selection process conducted by the White House.

The national selection committee will now review the applications of the 2024 state finalists, and the winners of the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching will be announced by the White House. It is a prestigious recognition that celebrates the contributions and achievements of educators in STEM fields.
