In Tripoli, Libya, there were clashes between armed groups on Friday evening. The fighting began in the town of Sawija and continued into Saturday. There were casualties as a result of the fighting.
The official from the local security authorities spoke to AFP about the clashes, stating that areas south of Sawija had been a battleground for armed groups since the previous night. The Libyan Red Cross evacuated families from the affected areas to safety, while schools closed and access roads were blocked due to gunfire between groups.
Since the overthrow of Muammar al-Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been in a state of chaos and violence. Armed militias and foreign mercenaries have engaged in conflicts, and the UN-recognized interim government in Tripoli is vying for power with a counter-government in Benghazi. The situation remains volatile, as evidenced by the recent fighting that resulted in casualties. The conflict in Libya shows no signs of abating as armed groups continue to clash.
