Villagers from several villages along the border with Azerbaijan gathered at the crossing between Kirants and Voskepar to protest traffic jams and express their dissatisfaction with the recent agreement between Yerevan and Baku. The villagers, upset with what they perceive as dishonesty during previous meetings, have set up tents and are waiting for clarification on the recent developments.
The border demarcation commissions of Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a 1976 agreement of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces that has affected several villages along the border. This agreement means that certain parts of the border are no longer considered demarcated, leading to changes in ownership and property rights for villagers. With the Kirants bridge passing to Azerbaijan and a new road expected to be constructed in the coming months, villagers face uncertainty over property loss and compensation.
Prime Minister Pashinyan praised the border demarcation as a “great success” and an important step for Armenia’s sovereignty during a government session. However, the villagers remain concerned about how these changes will impact their lives and livelihoods. The situation at the border crossing remains tense as people await further information and guidance from the authorities on their future.
