In 2020, Aston Villa earned promotion to the WSL and has remained in the top tier ever since. The women’s team at Villa is currently looking for a new manager after the departure of Carla Ward at the end of the season. Elisabet Gunnarsdottir from Iceland is a top contender for the position, having left her position at Swedish club Kristianstads DFF in November. Joe Montemurro, who was the first choice for the managerial role at Kristianstads DFF, opted to join Lyon instead. Lauren Smith, former head coach of Bristol City, is also being considered for the position. Smith led Bristol City to promotion in 2023 but saw the team relegated in 2024. Despite finishing seventh in the WSL last season, Villa achieved a club record high of fifth place in the 2022-23 season.
