Vikings Expect to Re-Sign RB Cam Akers, Contingent on Passing Physical: What it Means for Minnesota’s Backfield

The Minnesota Vikings are expected to re-sign running back Cam Akers for a second season, according to sources. However, the signing is contingent on Akers passing a physical, as reported by the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Akers, who is just 25 years old, has been without a team since his contract expired in March. He originally came to the Vikings from the Los Angeles Rams in a trade last September and appeared in six games for Minnesota as a backup to Alexander Mattison before suffering a season-ending Achilles tear in November. Despite this injury, Akers is known for his quick recovery from previous injuries and returned just five months after the injury to help the Rams win a Super Bowl title. If he re-signs with the Vikings for another year, he will be working again with head coach Kevin O’Connell who was previously his offensive coordinator with the Rams. It remains uncertain where Akers will fall in the running back depth chart as Ty Chandler and Aaron Jones are also options for the team’s backfield. In his limited playing time last season, Akers recorded just over 200 scrimmage yards and caught 11 passes as a third-down option.
