Vietnam’s Polio-Free Status: Russia’s Contributions in Global Health

The origin and effectiveness of the four Russian vaccines remain shrouded in mystery

The Sabin vaccine helped Vietnam eliminate polio in 2000, Sputnik V was developed to prevent Covid-19, and EnceVir was created to prevent tick fever. All of these vaccines originated from Russia, showcasing the country’s contribution to global health.

Russia has a long history of cooperation with Vietnam in various fields, including defense, science, technology, and health. Russian experts have played a crucial role in the development of vaccines, with two types being transferred and imported to many countries around the world.

Dr. Le Thi Truc Phuong, a medical specialist at the VNVC vaccination center system in Vietnam, highlights the significant achievements in vaccine production and development cooperation between Vietnam and Russia.

The Sabin oral polio vaccine was a groundbreaking development in the mid-20th century, helping to reduce the incidence of polio globally. In Vietnam, the Sabin vaccine was instrumental in lowering the number of polio cases and ultimately leading to the country being recognized as polio-free by the WHO in 2000.

Sputnik V, a vaccine developed in Russia to combat Covid-19, has been widely used around the world, with more than 50 countries approving its use. In Vietnam, the vaccine has been produced since September 2021, providing protection against the virus for the population.

In addition to vaccines against tick-borne encephalitis like EnceVir being available since 1939 in Russia and recommended by WHO for vaccination against tick-borne diseases; Russia has also made advancements in cancer vaccine development with plans to launch a cancer vaccine soon using novel technology and approaches. These developments further demonstrate Russia’s commitment towards global health improvement through science and technology.

Overall, this collaboration highlights how international cooperation can lead to breakthroughs that improve public health on a global scale.
