Vietnam’s Increasing Cancer Rates: Understanding the Factors and Taking Action

Cancer is a disease that can affect people of all ages and backgrounds. Despite the fact that the exact cause of many types of cancer remains unknown, research has shown that it is caused by a combination of factors such as lifestyle, environment, habits, age, and genetics.

In Vietnam, rates of cancer have been increasing in recent years, with young people being at an increased risk. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the incidence rate of cancer in Vietnam is ranked 91st, but the mortality rate is ranked 50th out of a total of 185 countries. This trend highlights the importance of early detection and prompt treatment to improve outcomes for those affected by cancer.

Dr. Ha Hai Nam, Deputy Head of Abdominal Surgery Department I at Central Hospital K in Vietnam explains that cancer starts from cells that grow uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors that can spread to other organs. While the exact cause of many types of cancer remains unknown, some factors that can contribute to its development include genetic mutations inherited or created during pregnancy, exposure to pollutants and environmental hazards such as chemicals in processed foods and water sources, passive smoking exposure from second-hand smoke, improper food storage leading to mold toxins and physical agents like radiation and sunlight.

To reduce the risk of cancer and improve outcomes for those affected by it, it’s important for individuals to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking. Regular screenings are also crucial for early detection which can significantly improve outcomes for certain types of cancer. Prevention methods also include vaccination against hepatitis B and C viruses which can lead to liver cancer if left untreated.
