Vietnam’s First Case of Influenza A/H9: A Health Alert and Guide to Avian Flu Prevention

Vietnam Reports First Case of Influenza A/H9

A 37-year-old male patient in Tien Giang was confirmed to be Vietnam’s first-ever case of influenza A/H9 on March 16, after testing positive for the virus. The patient had a fever and pneumonia and had bought medicine on March 10 before being admitted to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City. Test results revealed that the patient had influenza A with gene segments similar to those of the influenza A virus H9.

The patient lived in a poultry market area, but no sick or dead animals were found nearby. There is no evidence of person-to-person transmission of influenza A/H9. The Ministry of Health has confirmed this as Vietnam’s first case of influenza A(H9). In the Western Pacific region from 2015 to 2023, there were 98 cases of influenza A (H9N2) with two deaths reported.

There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine available for avian flu in humans. The Ministry of Health advises against consuming sick, dead or unknown origin poultry and to wash hands before eating. It also recommends avoiding contact with wild animals, especially birds, and reporting any sick or dead poultry to authorities. If you experience flu-like symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
