Vietnam’s Data Center Industry: The Next Frontier for Tech Giants?

Vietnam has potential to bring in Google and Amazon for data center development

Vietnam’s data center industry is booming, and the country is well-positioned to attract major tech companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft to build data centers. This is due to its strategic location and progressive policies, as noted in a report by JLL, a global real estate and investment management firm operating in over 80 countries.

Currently, the domestic telecommunications companies such as Viettel IDC, FPT Telecom, VNPT, and CMC Telecom dominate the Vietnamese data center market. However, international businesses are also entering the market with notable projects like the 20 MW Gaw Capital center in Ho Chi Minh City Hi-Tech Park and the NTT and QD Tek collaboration on a $70 million data center. Alibaba recently announced plans to establish a data center in Vietnam, showcasing the country’s appeal for data center investment in Asia.

JLL predicts that more cloud computing service providers from the US will follow suit, making the market more competitive and diverse. Vietnam’s data center industry is recognized as one of the fastest-growing markets in the world by research unit Savills. The country currently has 28 data centers with a total capacity of 45MW spread across three regions.
