Vietnam Overtakes the Philippines as China’s Leading Banana Exporter in Q1 2023: Insights into the Competitive Landscape and Export Performance

Vietnam overtakes the Philippines as top banana exporter to China

In the first four months of 2023, Vietnam surpassed the Philippines to become the leading country exporting bananas to China, with a volume of nearly 355,000 tons. This is a significant increase of more than 22% compared to the same period in 2023. The data has just been announced by the General Administration of Customs of China.

Vietnamese banana export output was 2.4 times higher than that of the Philippines in the first four months of the year, making it the first time Vietnamese bananas have surpassed those from the Philippines in terms of export volume to China. Despite being ranked second in banana growing area globally, after Ecuador, Vietnam’s dominance in this sector is undeniable.

However, despite its successes, Vietnam’s banana export prices have dropped sharply by 16%, down to 407.7 USD per ton. This is due to competition from other countries and increased logistics costs. The price decreased because China diversified its supply sources and started importing from different markets besides Vietnam and the Philippines. However, Vietnamese goods still remain competitive due to their advantages over other countries’ products.

In terms of value, Vietnam’s banana exports reached only $145 million in the first four months of 2023, up just 3% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, output increased by a whopping 22%. This is because prices dropped significantly for all ten countries that export bananas to China simultaneously during this period.

A leader in Dong Nai’s banana export business mentioned that they are aware of these challenges and are working hard to improve quality control measures and maintain their competitive edge in terms of price and delivery time. They believe that Vietnamese goods will continue to be dominant as long as they maintain high standards for quality control and logistics efficiency.

In addition to China, Vietnamese bananas are also exported strongly to Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, Japan, and Qatar with increasing quantities each year. The export value of fruits and vegetables is estimated at nearly $2.6 billion dollars by year-end – an increase of more than 28% compared to the same period last year.

Overall, Vietnam’s success as a leading exporter of bananas shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon – especially given its ability to adapt quickly to changing market conditions and maintain high levels
