Max Scherzer, the veteran pitcher, made his 2024 season debut for the Texas Rangers against the Kansas City Royals after being activated from the injured list. Manager Bruce Bochy expressed optimism about Scherzer’s return, noting that he was feeling good.
Scherzer had been recovering from offseason surgery for a herniated disc and had not yet pitched in the 2024 season. He last pitched in Game 3 of the World Series for the Rangers before experiencing back tightness. Right-hander Yerry Rodriguez was sent down to Triple-A Round Rock to make room for Scherzer on the roster.
After a minor league rehab assignment that was interrupted by right thumb soreness and a nerve issue extending to his forearm and triceps, Scherzer made his return to the mound in June. Bochy stated that there would be no strict pitch count for Scherzer’s return, as they would monitor his performance and how he felt inning by inning.
In his first start of the season, Scherzer impressed by only allowing one hit over five innings with four strikeouts. The team is hopeful that Scherzer’s return will bolster their pitching staff as they aim to compete in the season and beyond.
