Vertikal Nydalen, designed by Snøhetta, is a unique energy-efficient skyscraper in Norway. The building’s innovative design solutions maintain comfortable temperatures year-round without the need for energy from the grid. This was reported by New Atlas on May 16.

The building features an asymmetrical shape with two interconnected towers that protect the neighborhood landscape and provide visibility of nearby squares. The exterior is finished in fading pine and steel balconies, while the interior includes a restaurant, office space, and apartments.

The three-zero solution used by Vertikal Nydalen controls temperature using geothermal wells for heating and cooling, photovoltaic cells for heat pumps, and large glass windows for natural light. The building also utilizes ventilation holes that open automatically and chamfered wall surfaces to aid airflow instead of traditional ventilation systems. This design maximizes space by eliminating the need for air ducts and fans, creating a comfortable and efficient environment.

Sensors monitor performance and optimize energy use, while a feedback system allows occupants to provide comments on comfort. Snøhetta’s experience with sustainable construction projects like ZEB Pilot House and Powerhouse Brattørkaia informed the innovative design of Vertikal Nydalen.
