Donna Leon, Author, Voices Criticism Against Venice’s New Entrance Fee

In 2007, Donna Leon, the acclaimed author and Venice expert, moved to Switzerland to escape the overwhelming influx of tourists in her beloved city. She believes that reducing the number of tourists is an impossible task and considers a higher fee to be unfair. Leon questions whether only wealthy individuals should be able to afford visiting Venice, as she believes everyone should have the right to admire its beauty.

Leon has lived in Venice for 30 years and has drawn inspiration for her successful series about Commissioner Brunetti from the city’s vibrant culture and history. The latest volume in the series, titled “Trial by Fire,” was published on May 29th. Despite her love for Venice, Leon is not in favor of the new admission fees on certain days implemented by the city to better control the number of tourists. She believes that a five euro fee will have little impact and that the authorities are more interested in making money from visitors rather than limiting tourism.
