On the second day of the 2024 NHL Draft, the Vegas Golden Knights made a trade, sending goaltender Logan Thompson to the Washington Capitals. The 27-year-old had spent parts of four seasons with the Golden Knights and was on the Stanley Cup winning team in 2022-23, although he missed the final three months of the season due to injury.
Thompson’s time with the Golden Knights came to an end on a Saturday, which was a bit awkward timing as he was scheduled to have an autograph session for fans inside the Sphere in Las Vegas. Despite the trade being announced shortly before the autograph session, Thompson went through with it as a way to say goodbye to the fans who had supported him throughout his time in Las Vegas. He spent an hour signing autographs and taking photos with fans.
After meeting with the reporters, Thompson admitted that he had requested a trade and mentioned that it will take some time for him to process the move to Washington. The Capitals acquired Thompson from their affiliate team in Hershey during the 2019-20 season and also have a relationship with Capitals goaltending coach Scott Murray. Following this trade, Akira Schmid from New Jersey Devils was acquired by Golden Knights to serve as Adin Hill’s backup goalie.
