VDL Groep and Schmitz Cargobull’s Acquisition of Van Hool Bus Builder Nears Completion: The Battle for the Landmark Firm Continues.

Van Hool’s revival is not guaranteed to protect numerous jobs, with a possible buyer showing signs of backing out.

The battle for the bus builder Van Hool in Koningshooikt is nearing its conclusion, with the bankruptcy application being postponed for a week to allow for a smooth restart. The name of the acquirer, likely the VDL Groep consortium with German trailer builder Schmitz Cargobull, will be announced when the bankruptcy is filed early next week.

The chances for the other candidate, Dumarey Group, are diminishing, with the third candidate, Vlastuin, already dropping out. According to sources, VDL and Cargobull plan to save fewer jobs than outlined in the recovery plan by crisis manager Marc Zwaaneveld. They intend to move much of the production to North Macedonia and limit activities in Koningshooikt. Schmitz Cargobull also plans to assemble limited editions of trailers in Koningshooikt and redevelop a large part of the site as real estate.

In other news, Dumarey Group is facing challenges with the proposed price for the property, including soil pollution remediation costs. The banks, as creditors, have a say in the restart of the company, complicating the acquisition process. The union is concerned about potential job losses and urges the government and banks to prioritize retaining as many jobs as possible.
