Vanderbilt University Appoints Tim McNamara as Dean of College of Arts and Science Amidst Period of Transition and Growth

Vanderbilt University has appointed Tim McNamara as the dean of its College of Arts and Science. McNamara, a 41-year veteran staff member at Vanderbilt, will start his two-year term on July 1.

McNamara is an experienced academic leader who has been serving as interim dean for the college since July 2023. He began his academic career at Vanderbilt in 1983 as an instructor just before completing his Ph.D. degree and has since progressed to professor status. Over the years, he has also served as the chair of the VU Department of Psychology and taken on additional responsibilities as associate provost and vice provost for faculty and research.

In addition to his leadership roles, McNamara played a significant role in the reorganization of both Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He completed his undergraduate education at the University of Kansas and earned his doctorate in psychology from Yale University, making him well-equipped to lead the college towards a bright future during a period of growth and progress for both institutions.

Vanderbilt Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Cybele Raver, expressed confidence in McNamara’s appointment as dean, citing his strategic insights, collaboration skills, and dedication to teaching excellence. She emphasized that he possesses the right leadership qualities to guide the school towards success during this time of transition.

“Tim is an exceptional scholar and administrator with a proven track record of leadership,” said Raver. “His passion for teaching and commitment to excellence will serve our students well as they pursue their academic goals.”

Raver added that McNamara’s experience in academia will be critical during this period of growth and change for both Vanderbilt University and its College of Arts and Science.

“We are excited about Tim’s appointment as dean,” said Raver. “His expertise in social sciences will help us continue to develop innovative programs that prepare our students for success in today’s world.”
