US Military Responds to Houthi Attacks with Self-Defense and Destruction of Missiles and UAVs

Another Houthi attack in the Red Sea reportedly repelled by Centcom

On Saturday, June 1, the US Central Command (Centcom) announced that it had destroyed a Houthi unmanned aerial vehicle in the southern Red Sea between 9:00 and 19:30 (Sanaa time). Two other drones were also observed falling into the Red Sea during the same period. Between 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the US military also destroyed two Houthi anti-ship ballistic missiles in the southern Red Sea, which were launched towards the US warship Gravely and were destroyed in self-defense.

Despite these attacks, neither American, nor coalition, nor commercial vessels reported any damage. The US military emphasizes that it acted in self-defense to protect its assets in the region. This came after an announcement by Yemeni group Ansar Allah (Houthis) earlier on May 31 that they attacked the aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) and an American destroyer in the Red Sea.

Additionally, commercial civilian vessels Maina, Aloraiq, and Abliani were reportedly attacked in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea by Houthi forces who claimed responsibility for these attacks and mentioned the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The situation in the region remains tense as ongoing military activities continue between the US military and Houthi forces.
