During a press conference held in Tokyo, Admiral John Aquilino, the head of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, voiced his concerns about China’s increasing defense spending. He expressed worry that despite economic challenges in China, the country is allocating significantly more funds to its military than previously reported.
Aquilino pointed out that China’s aggressive actions and rhetoric in the South and East China Seas are particularly concerning. He highlighted the disputed Second Thomas Shoal and Taiwan as areas where Chinese pressure on neighboring countries is intensifying. The Chinese foreign ministry did not respond immediately to requests for comment, but a military leader recently stated that China remains committed to resolving maritime disputes through dialogue while asserting its sovereignty.
Aquilino also criticized North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, for prioritizing military spending over addressing food shortages in the country. He condemned these actions as “disgusting,” emphasizing the need for responsible allocation of resources to address critical issues affecting populations.
