UPMC-Washington (Pa.) Health System Partnership: A Step Toward Improved Healthcare Services in the Community

UPMC and Washington Health affiliated successfully

The Washington (Pa.) Health System has officially joined forces with UPMC, the Pittsburgh-based health system, to form UPMC Washington and UPMC Greene. This partnership was announced in June 2023 after a letter of intent was signed to bring WHS under UPMC’s umbrella. Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry played a crucial role in facilitating this partnership in late May.

As part of the new affiliation, UPMC has committed to investing a minimum of $300 million over the next decade to enhance clinical services at UPMC Washington and UPMC Greene. This investment aims to improve healthcare services in the community and secure a healthy future for Washington and Greene counties for generations to come. The local board of directors for both facilities will include members from WHS and new UPMC members to oversee operations.

Over the years, WHS and UPMC have collaborated on various services such as oncology, pediatric specialties, and heart and vascular care. UPMC plans to continue investing in these collaborations and enhance services in areas like women’s health, cardiology, emergency care, diagnostics, surgical services, and primary care. The goal is to provide high-quality healthcare services to the community while maintaining existing insurance contracts for in-network access.

Brook Ward, president of UPMC Washington and UPMC Greene, expressed his excitement about the completed affiliation and looks forward to a new era of partnership with UPMC. This partnership ensures the preservation of an important community asset and strengthens healthcare services in the region for years to come.
