Auburn police receive $122K grant for innovative technology

Auburn Police Department recently received a $122,500 grant from the state Division of Criminal Justice Services’ Law Enforcement Technology program. The funds will be used to purchase new equipment and upgrade technology. Chief James Slayton announced the award to city councilors and mentioned that it will be used to enhance surveillance cameras in the city. This grant will benefit the citizens of Auburn by improving safety and security.

Along with Auburn PD, two other law enforcement agencies in Cayuga County also received grants. The sheriff’s office was awarded $117,526, and the Weedsport Police Department received $95,000. Statewide, a total of $127 million has been distributed to 378 law enforcement agencies for technology purchases. These purchases include computer-aided dispatch systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and gunshot detection devices. Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of investing in public safety and providing law enforcement agencies with the necessary tools and resources.

The Division of Criminal Justice Services reported that a significant portion of the funding will go towards license plate readers, body-worn cameras, patrol vehicle equipment, and camera systems. These investments aim to help law enforcement agencies effectively carry out their duties and enhance public safety. Governor Hochul reiterated her commitment to supporting law enforcement and safeguarding communities. The grants are designed to address the evolving needs of police departments and sheriffs’ offices as they work to protect the future of New York State.
