Unveiling the Hidden Public Health Crisis: The Dying Early Series Wins Prestigious Awards

The Post Receives Recognition from National Headliner Awards and Association of Health Care Journalists

It is with great pleasure that we announce that our Health and Science, Local, and Well+Being desks have been recognized in two prestigious national journalism contests for their collaborative efforts across the newsroom. Our project, “Dying Early: America’s Life Expectancy Crisis,” has received the National Headliner First Place Award for News Series in Daily Newspapers. The judges were impressed by the series and praised it for its ability to challenge conventional wisdom and shed light on the hidden public health crisis of chronic diseases.

The series was made possible through in-depth analysis of death data, which revealed that chronic diseases are responsible for twice as many years of life lost as overdoses and firearm deaths combined. Our journalists from various teams within the newsroom, including Audience, Audio, Copy Desk, Data, Design, Graphics, Health and Science, International, Photo, and Video worked tirelessly to document the nation’s declining life expectancy.

Their efforts took them to 10 states, two continents, and the homes of families impacted by premature deaths. The series is a powerful testament to the dedication of our newsroom teams in uncovering important public health issues and bringing them to light for our readers.
