Unveiling the Future of Forensics: The Tri-County Biological Science Center Breaks Ground

Construction of the Tri-County Biological Science Center set to begin in early June

A construction crew will begin breaking ground on the Tri-County Biological Science Center in just over a week, after the project was approved for maximum funding. The state-of-the-art forensic lab, which is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2025, will be located on Leeds Avenue.

The Guaranteed Maximum Price Amendment for the construction phase has been negotiated, totaling $20,543,082. Once staff and equipment are in place, the center will undergo a two-year accreditation period. The first year will focus on validating software, developing procedures and policies, and training scientists, while the second year will concentrate on documentation, mock cases, and obtaining official accreditation.

Tri-County Biological Center Laboratory Director Tom Van Koughnett expressed excitement about the rapid progress of the project. He stated that going from acquiring land parcel to having an approved council design in just two years is a significant achievement. Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell emphasized the importance of the center for the area. He explained that without proper identification, it becomes challenging for law enforcement to initiate investigative procedures. Hartwell highlighted a current case they are working on that underscores the need for this new facility as lack of CODIS sample has complicated identification process.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Tri-County Biological Science Center is scheduled for May 31st with demolition of existing buildings on property set to take place on June 3rd. Officials are eagerly anticipating completion of state-of-the-art forensic lab which will provide crucial resources for law enforcement and coroners in Lowcountry region.

In conclusion, this new facility is much needed as it will bring advanced forensic technology to aid law enforcement agencies in their investigations and improve coroners’ work efficiency by providing them with modern tools and resources to enhance their accuracy rates.
