On Champions Day for Derby Week, the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame announced its 2024 Class at Churchill Downs. Gov. Andy Beshear was present at the ceremony to honor Ansel Williamson, a formerly enslaved Black horse trainer who trained Aristides, the winner of the first Kentucky Derby in 1875. Williamson’s life and contributions to the sport were celebrated alongside other Black horsemen who made significant impact on the sport. The event was attended by officials from the Ed Brown Society and Churchill Downs. Copyright 2024 WAVE. All rights reserved.
