The ongoing conflict in Gaza has far-reaching consequences for the mental well-being of its residents, according to Tlaleng Mofokeng, a United Nations expert on the right to health. While the physical injuries from the conflict are plainly visible and severe, Mofokeng emphasized that it is equally important to recognize the potential for acute mental distress to lead to anxiety and other mental illnesses in the future. It is imperative that we address these mental health issues intentionally and proactively.
UNICEF reported in February that 17,000 children in Gaza were separated or unaccompanied during the conflict, highlighting a significant need for mental health support among almost all children in the enclave. The destruction of hospitals like Al Shifa Hospital and the killing and injury of healthcare workers have further exacerbated the health crisis in Gaza. Israeli authorities have accused Hamas of using medical facilities for military purposes, contributing to the deterioration of the health system in Gaza.
Mofokeng expressed deep concern about the risk of water and airborne diseases in Gaza, as well as the lack of medical supplies and reproductive and mental health services available in the region. The current conditions in Gaza are not conducive to ensuring that everyone has access to healthcare services, making it critical to provide immediate assistance and resources to address both physical and mental health challenges facing Gaza’s population.
