Unraveling Russia’s Assassination Plot: Ukraine’s Arrest of Security Colonels Marks Another Milestone in Countering Russian Espionage

Accusations of Plotting to Assassinate Mr. Zelensky Leveled Against Two Ukrainian Colonels

In recent news, Ukraine has arrested two security colonels on charges of colluding with Russia in a plot to assassinate high-ranking officials, including President Zelensky. According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) had plans to eliminate the President and other top officials, but these plans were foiled by members of counterintelligence and the SBU.

The State Security Department (UDO) is responsible for protecting public agencies, officials, and their relatives. The SBU stated that Russia was actively seeking individuals close to President Zelensky’s bodyguard who could potentially harm or abduct him. In addition to the President, the enemy also targeted Major General Vasyl Malyuk and Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov.

Russian spies were recruiting individuals to monitor Ukrainian officials’ activities and report their whereabouts for potential missile attacks. After launching missiles at the targets, Russia planned to send unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to eliminate survivors and cover up its tracks. Despite these allegations, Russia has not officially responded to the accusations made by Ukraine.

This is not the first time that Ukraine has uncovered plots to harm President Zelensky. In the past, suspects were arrested for gathering intelligence on the President’s schedule and security arrangements. Polish prosecutors also recently announced the arrest of an individual accused of assisting Russian special forces in planning an attack on President Zelensky. These incidents highlight
