Mills and Roy Named Athletes of the Year at Volusia-Flagler High School Sports Awards

The Volusia-Flagler High School Sports Awards, an esteemed event that recognizes the outstanding achievements of student-athletes in the region, was held on June 3 at Ocean Center Arena. Halifax Health provided support to make it a successful and unforgettable night for all involved. Two exceptional athletes from Matanzas and Spruce Creek were honored as the athlete of the year award winners: Jordan Mills and Mackenzie Roy.

Jordan Mills, a senior at Matanzas, demonstrated remarkable athletic versatility throughout the year. His impressive performance on the football field as the team’s second-leading tackler with 69 solo stops earned him recognition, while his success in wrestling was equally noteworthy. Mills won the Class 2A state championship at 190 pounds with a perfect record of 52-0, showcasing his skill and dedication to his craft. Additionally, Mills excelled in track and field, qualifying for regionals and being recognized as the area’s top 400-meter hurdler. His accomplishments led to him being named to the All-Area first teams in football and wrestling, with second-team recognition in track and field.

On the other hand, Mackenzie Roy, a junior at Spruce Creek, impressed in cross country, soccer, and track and field during the 2023-24 school year. She placed fourth in Class 4A in cross country, ran a top time of 18:05.5, and scored goals for her school’s soccer team. Roy continued her success in track and field by finishing as a runner-up in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events at the Class 4A finals. These achievements led to Roy receiving All-Area recognition in all three sports
