Unprecedented Mosquito Shortage in Germany: How the ‘Flood Mosquito’ Blight is Putting Residents at Risk

Germany is under siege by mosquitoes as mosquito repellent supply dwindles

Mosquitoes are wreaking havoc in Germany this summer, with many people struggling to find mosquito repellent in retail stores and pharmacies. The situation is particularly dire in the regions of Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, and Bavaria. The shortages have been caused by an increase in demand for mosquito repellent compared to previous years, as well as a lack of supply due to the recent floods that created ideal breeding conditions for the insects.

According to Doreen Werner from the Leibniz Center for Agricultural Landscape Research, every flood is followed by flood mosquitoes, and this year’s situation is a direct result of recent flooding in Germany. Despite relief not coming quickly, experts believe that within a few months, the mosquito population should decrease as eggs continue to hatch in stages. In the meantime, people are advised to protect themselves from mosquito bites as best they can.
