Unlocking the Secrets of Soil Science: A Fun-Filled Day for Kids at MSU’s Youth Soil Science Field Day!

Youth Invited to MSU’s Inaugural Soil Science Day

On June 21, the Youth Soil Science Field Day event will take place at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center in Verona. This event is designed specifically for students aged 8-12 who are interested in soil science. Sponsored by the MSU Extension Service, the event will be coordinated by Amee Bumguardner, MSU assistant professor of agronomy.

The goal of this event is to introduce young people to various aspects of soil science that they may not have encountered in their school curriculum. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with MSU scientists and engage in hands-on activities that explore topics such as how soil provides nutrients to plants and how livestock impact the soil. Activities will include painting with soil and learning how to classify soil characteristics.

Registration for this event is free and can be completed by June 19 at https://tinyurl.com/3tk77n82. The field day will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 11:30 a.m. Parents and caregivers are welcome to stay with their children during the event or pick them up at the end.

The North Mississippi Research and Extension Center is located at 5421 Highway 145 South in Verona. MSU is committed to providing equal opportunities and accommodations for all participants.
