Australia is making great strides towards reaching net zero emissions by 2050, with plans to phase out fossil fuels and invest in renewable energy sources like wind power. While many countries focus on offshore wind farms, Australia is researching terrestrial wind power technology.

The $2.7 billion Golden Plains wind farm project, located in Golden Plains Shire, Victoria, Australia, is an example of this commitment to renewable energy. The project is led by the TagEnergy company and will have a total power generation capacity of 1.3 GW once completed. Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas will be supplying turbines for this ambitious project.

Construction on the Golden Plains wind farm began in 2023 and is divided into two phases. The first phase involved installing turbines with a capacity of 756 MW, while the second phase will see an additional 93 turbines of the same capacity added, increasing the electricity generation capacity by 577 MW. Once completed, the wind farm is expected to generate 4,500 GWh of electricity annually, meeting 8% of Victoria’s energy needs.

With the second phase set to begin commercial operations in 2027, Golden Plains will play a significant role in improving Victoria’s energy security, lowering electricity costs, and reducing carbon pollution. Andrew Riggs, manager at TagEnergy, expressed excitement about the project and the positive impact it will have on accelerating the energy transition in Australia.
