Unlocking a Comprehensive Approach to Urban Health: WHO Releases Policy Briefs and Hosts Webinar on Best Practices

Promoting a strategic perspective on urban health

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently released a series of policy briefs aimed at supporting strategic decision-making in urban health. These briefs focus on key themes such as generating and working with evidence, governance and financing, innovation, and partnerships and participation. These themes are considered essential “means of implementation” that lay the groundwork for a comprehensive, integrated approach to urban health.

In the face of increasing urban complexity, a strategic, multi-sectoral approach to urban health is essential. WHO has emphasized the importance of moving beyond isolated approaches to health and towards a more holistic framework. This approach is reflected in WHO’s guidance on the Social Determinants of Health, Health in All Policies, and other initiatives.

Experts from various domains will explore the potential for amplifying and scaling best practices in urban health during an upcoming webinar organized by the Urban Health Unit within the Department of Social Determinants of Health at WHO. The event will take place on June 18th, 2024 from 1:30-2:45 pm CEST. Speakers at the event will include individuals from the WHO Urban Health Unit, UN-Habitat Geneva Office, United Cities and Local Governments, University of Buffalo, City of Utrecht, and the State of Qatar’s Minister of Public Health Office.

The webinar will introduce the new series of policy briefs and feature discussions on their value in supporting strategic decision-making in urban health. Additionally, attendees will be encouraged to submit case studies that demonstrate strategic action for urban health at the city or national level.
