Unleashing Creativity: Art for Mental Wellbeing in Reading

Art Exhibition for Mental Health Awareness Week

A unique project aimed at raising awareness about mental health has placed artwork on exhibit throughout a town. Organized by Together for Mental Wellbeing, Reading Borough Council, and Reading Voluntary Action, the initiative called Threads of Resilience allowed individuals receiving mental health support to express themselves through art. The pieces are currently being displayed in various locations in the town to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week.

Joseph Silvanos, one of the artists involved in the project, described it as “an incredible way to get the community together.” He mentioned how the experience had taught him about patience, consistency, and resilience. Farah Taha highlighted how the project helped participants find a way to cope with life’s challenges and hardships.

The artwork, created over a 12-month period, is currently on display at several locations including Reading Central Library, the train station, and the borough council offices. The display at the library was attended by Mayor of Reading, Tony Page, who emphasized the importance of collaborating to address community needs such as mental health.

Andre Silva, service and oversight project manager at Together for Mental Wellbeing, expressed his desire to continue working with the council on similar projects in the future. This project aims to not only raise awareness about mental health but also provide a creative outlet for individuals to express themselves and cope with life’s difficulties.
