University Research Corridor Reveals Economic Impact: State Benefits from Partnership Between Three Michigan Universities

3-university research alliance in Michigan generates $24 billion in economic impact

In 2023, a significant economic impact report was released, highlighting the contributions of an alliance of three Michigan universities known as the University Research Corridor (URC). The partnership between the University of Michigan, Michigan State, and Wayne State has contributed to research, education, and innovation activities that have positively impacted the state’s economy.

The URC Economic Impact Report showed that for every dollar invested by the state in the three universities, $24 was put back into the state economy. This was achieved through initiatives such as training skilled workers for local businesses, in-state spending by students and alumni, research investments, and job creation.

The economic impact of the universities also extended to communities across every county in Michigan. The total impact of $23.9 billion was compared to the economic impact of the NFL Draft held in Detroit, which was $165 million. The URC is responsible for approximately $3 billion in research and development annually.

The report also highlighted the medical contributions made by the three universities. They awarded 21% more medical degrees and a total of 2,500 more medical degrees for the fourth consecutive year. This has contributed significantly to
