United States Reaffirms Commitment to Security and Stability in Asia-Pacific Amidst China’s Growing Influence

Commerce Secretary Raimondo Clarifies U.S. Indo Pacific Economic Engagement Does Not Target China

During a recent visit to Singapore, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo highlighted the importance of a strong U.S. presence in the Indo-Pacific region for security and stability. She emphasized the need to solidify ties in the area and showcased the U.S.’ commitment to actively engage with countries in the region, regardless of China’s approach.

Raimondo acknowledged China’s increasing investments in the region but emphasized that the U.S. was also actively participating in the area, showcasing its economic support through technology, technical assistance, and capital, alongside international allies like those in the G7. The focus, she stated, was on building strong relationships with partner countries through sustainable infrastructure projects and addressing climate objectives during bilateral meetings to promote sustainable development.

At a recent IPEF ministerial meeting, member countries signed a “clean economy” agreement and announced $23 billion in investment opportunities for sustainable infrastructure projects. Raimondo highlighted the importance of collective action as a way to address issues such as industrial overcapacity and subsidized goods in global markets that affect countries’ trade relationships with China, but not dictate them by the U.S.

Raimondo raised concerns about China’s approach towards regional security and its impact on other countries’ sovereignty while acknowledging their economic ties with other nations in the region. She emphasized that while these ties cannot be ignored or undermined by China’s actions, they must be addressed through diplomatic means to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

The U.S remains committed to working with partners in the region to promote stability and security while respecting their sovereignty and economic ties with other nations in the area.

In conclusion, during her visit to Singapore, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo reaffirmed her country’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence in Asia-Pacific for security purposes while stressing on strengthening relations with partner nations through economic support and diplomatic engagement amidst increasing Chinese influence in the region.
