Unions Call for New Taxi Strike in Major Italian Cities: Insufficient Licenses and Supply Concerns in Major Cities

Big cities at risk of being paralyzed by new taxi strike

In the days leading up to the European elections, major cities are at risk of being disrupted by a new taxi strike scheduled for 5 and 6 June. Multiple unions including Ugl taxi, Federtaxi Cisal, Satam, Tam, Claai, Unione Artigiani, Unione Tassisti d’Italia, Uritaxi, Fast Confal taxi, Unica taxi Cgil, Orsa taxi and Usb taxi have announced their intention to protest once again. The white cars will stop from 8am to 10pm on both days to demand the implementation of the law regulating the industry.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has called for a meeting with all associations on Tuesday 4 June to discuss the issues raised by the unions. However, the strike remains confirmed until further notice. The unions emphasize the need for clear and non-negotiable rules to address the problems in the sector.

As summer approaches, data from Istat shows around 23 thousand taxis operating in provincial capitals in Italy. However, there is a shortage of services in major cities like Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin, Florence and Bologna due to insufficient licenses despite high demand. Antitrust reports have highlighted that an increase in licenses is necessary to meet demand in these cities.

Consumer associations have criticized the strike calling for reforms in the sector to address structural issues. The lack of supply and control measures has raised concerns among users who are concerned about their safety while using taxis. Municipalities like Milan and Rome are planning to issue new licenses to address this issue while agreements have been reached for new licenses in Bologna to improve services. Overall
