Unexpected Split: Justin Thomas Parts Ways with Jim Mackay as he Looks for a Fresh Start at the Masters

In a shocking announcement just one week before the Masters, Justin Thomas has decided to part ways with his longtime caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay. Thomas expressed his gratitude for Mackay’s time on his bag in 2021 and the success they achieved together, including winning the PGA Championship in 2022, participating in the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cups. Thomas acknowledged Mackay’s guidance and support during a challenging phase of his career and stated that he was grateful for his presence throughout.

Golf Channel insider Todd Lewis reported that Thomas has enlisted veteran caddie Matt Minister, who previously worked with Patrick Cantlay, to caddie for him at the upcoming Masters tournament in his quest to secure his first green jacket. Thomas, a 15-time Tour winner, brought Mackay on board in 2021 after his stint as an on-course reporter for NBC Sports, following a long partnership with Phil Mickelson. Before that, Thomas had collaborated with veteran caddie Jimmy Johnson.

While Thomas and Mackay enjoyed success together, their time was marked by challenges as Thomas experienced a subpar season in 2023, missing the FedExCup playoffs and requiring a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup. However, Thomas has shown improvement recently with eight top-12 finishes since last fall, focusing on refining his approach play with the help of his father, Mike. Despite this progress, Thomas struggles with his putting, ranking outside the top 150 in strokes gained: putting.

Mackay was already slated to work as an on-course reporter for NBC during the final round of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur on Saturday. Thomas expressed his optimism for both his and Mackay’s futures and emphasized his appreciation for their time together, wishing Mackay and his family the best.
