Unearthing the Secrets of Ancient Roman Wine: Discovering the World’s Oldest Bottle in a Spanish Burial Site

Ancient Roman burial site yields oldest known wine

A recent study has revealed the discovery of the world’s oldest bottle of wine, found in an ancient Roman burial site in southern Spain. The wine, which was contained in a glass funeral urn inside an untouched mausoleum in the town of Carmona, Andalusia, had been sealed for about 2,000 years.

The preservation of the liquid in the funerary urn was surprising to the team of researchers who conducted the study, with exceptional conservation conditions being noted. The team included the City of Carmona’s municipal archaeologist and the Department of Organic Chemistry at the University of Cordoba.

The wine was confirmed to be preservable after a series of tests were conducted on it. This discovery surpasses the previous record held by the Speyer wine bottle from the fourth century AD, now preserved at the Historical Museum of Pfalz in Germany.
