Unearthing the Past: The Iron Age Discovery in Janakkala, Finland

Archaeologists unearth Iron Age throwing spear tip in Janakkala

In the heart of Finland, a significant discovery has been made by archeology enthusiast Mikko Mäkelä. An Iron Age throwing spear tip was recently discovered in Janakkala, indicating a rich history of life in the region during that time. The ango, a favored weapon of the elite during the Middle Iron Age, was shaped with barbs and dates back to the Merovingian period (550–800).

The spearhead was found in a wooded area near a field and its purpose remains speculative due to its location at the foot of a rock. However, this discovery confirms the existence of Iron Age life in the area and has added to a growing collection of ancient artifacts found by dedicated enthusiasts like Mäkelä and Reijo Hyvönen.

The Vanaja valley is full of evidence of Iron Age settlements and artifacts, shedding light on the region’s past prosperity. This concentration of settlements around ancient Vanaja points to a historically significant period in the region.

Archeologist Ilari Aalto from the University of Turku emphasizes the importance of respecting private property when searching for ancient relics and reminds enthusiasts of their legal obligations surrounding such discoveries.
