Three young explorers discovered a rare juvenile T. rex fossil in North Dakota, which has been affectionately named “Teen Rex.” The brothers Jessin and Liam Fisher, along with their dad and cousin, found the fossil in 2022. They contacted Dr. Tyler Lyson, the Curator of Paleontology at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, who led the excavation of the fossil they named “The Brother” in the summer of 2023.
The fossil was believed to be a piece of T. rex’s skull and two teeth. Dr. Lyson praised the young explorers for their passion and discovery, noting that it advances science and deepens our understanding of the natural world. The boys were thrilled to see their favorite part – bones sticking out of rock – during the excavation process.
As a reward for their incredible find, they received a bronze replica of T. rex’s tooth from Dr. Lyson. The fossil is currently on display in a temporary exhibition titled “Discovering Teen Rex” at the museum, which will be shown on giant screen Infinity Theater’s documentary titled “T.REX”.
