Undrafted and Unproven: The Steelers Bet on Former NFL Wideout Izaiah Gathings

Steelers ink TE Izaiah Gathings to one-year contract

The Steelers recently signed tight end Izaiah Gathings to a one-year contract, as confirmed by the team on Wednesday. Gathings had a workout with the team earlier in the week. Originally entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Jets following their rookie minicamp in 2023, he also spent some time with the Chiefs last season and even had a stint on their practice squad. However, the Chiefs released him on May 4. Despite his previous NFL experience, Gathings has yet to make his regular-season debut in the league.

Gathings showcased his skills during his college football career at Middle Tennessee State, catching 60 passes for 559 yards and two touchdowns in the 2022 season alone. Over the course of two seasons, he played a total of 24 games and amassed 84 receptions for 861 yards and three touchdowns. Prior to his time at Middle Tennessee State, Gathings played for Gardner-Webb, where he appeared in 24 games and had 101 receptions for 1,341 yards and 13 touchdowns. His college experience has prepared him well for his transition to the professional level as he looks to make an impact with the Steelers.
