Uncovering the Secrets of the Past: A Community Celebration in Snowmass

Lecture on Snowmass ice age discovery to be hosted by scientists

In 2010, a massive ice age discovery was made in Snowmass during an excavation at Ziegler Reservoir. The resulting mural at the Snowmass Mall displays skeletons of the animals uncovered during that time. On Friday, June 21, at 6 p.m., scientists who participated in the dig will be hosting a lecture at the Snowmass Chapel to discuss their findings.

The speakers include Chief Science Officer for National Geographic Ian Miller, lead paleobotanist Gussie Maccracken, Assistant Curator of Paleobotany for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and an intern on the 2010 dig, David Heil, who is now president of the Aspen Science Center. During the lecture, they will delve into the details of the dig that revealed thousands of ice age fossils.

On Saturday, June 22 from 2-6 p.m., a community celebration is being held in Base Village. The event offers free activities such as completing the Ice Age Passport Walk and learning about the discovery through education stations from the Aspen Science Center. Visitors can also enjoy live music with family and friends while taking in the beauty of Snowmass.
