UN Secretary-General Warns Humans Are ‘Delinquent Sons’ of Mother Earth, Urges Immediate Action on Climate Crisis

UN calls for restoring harmony with nature and embracing sustainable production

On International Planet Day, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, issued a stern warning about the impact of global chaos brought upon by pollution, species extinction, ecosystems, and greenhouse gases. He likened humanity to a “delinquent son” of Mother Earth. In his message, Guterres emphasized the importance of restoring harmony with nature and promoting sustainable production and consumption. He urged governments to take immediate action to protect indigenous peoples, communities, and those most impacted by climate and biodiversity crises.

Guterres also called for climate justice for countries disproportionately affected by these issues and quick mobilization of necessary financing and support to protect nature and promote sustainable development. The Secretary General highlighted the urgent need for nations to develop new climate plans limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. He urged the G20 to take a lead role in phasing out fossil fuels and ending nature-destructive subsidies.

In conclusion, Guterres underscored the importance of repairing relationships with Mother Earth as central to addressing humanity’s challenges. He emphasized that taking immediate action is crucial in creating a better future for all.
