On Monday, the United Nations Security Council approved a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan in the Gaza Strip. This resolution was promoted by Algeria and nine other non-permanent member countries. The approval comes in response to the Israeli Army’s military offensive on the Palestinian enclave, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 32,300 people.
UN Secretary General António Guterres announced the approval of the resolution on social media, highlighting the importance of ending the violence and securing the release of all hostages. The resolution was passed with 14 votes in favor, no votes against, and one abstention – from the United States. The Council rejected a previous amendment from Russia that called for stronger language in the resolution.
The Algerian ambassador to the UN praised the Council for taking responsibility to maintain international peace and security. He emphasized the urgency of ending the bloodshed before it’s too late. The US representative to the UN expressed support for the resolution and urged Hamas to accept the ceasefire agreement.
