UM Health Seeks Additional Beds for Mental Health Crisis by Repurposing Abandoned Lansing High School

In response to the growing mental health crisis in Michigan, the University of Michigan Health is seeking additional beds from the state to address this critical issue. The group plans to repurpose the vacant Lansing Eastern High School, located next to UM Health – Sparrow emergency room in Lansing, for mental health patients.

The building, which has been abandoned for years, will require extensive renovations before it can be used for patients. However, UM Health aims to secure 120 beds for this purpose as 60% of mental health patients in emergency departments are currently waiting for a bed. The proximity of the former high school to Sparrow’s emergency room is crucial for patients as it will provide immediate access to necessary care.

UM Health also intends to preserve the history of Lansing Eastern High School while repurposing the building for mental health beds. This move will not only benefit those in need but also provide a sense of community pride and heritage preservation.
