During a meeting of defense chiefs from Pacific and Asian countries in Singapore, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused China of supporting Russia and prolonging the war in Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized the importance of countries in the region participating in the upcoming peace summit on Ukraine scheduled to take place in Switzerland on June 15th and 16th.
Zelensky expressed his concern over China’s support for Russia, stating that it would only serve to prolong the conflict, which is detrimental not only to Ukraine but to the whole world. Despite the Ukrainian side’s interest in dialogue, Zelensky noted that Chinese representatives did not approach him during the Singapore meeting.
The Ukrainian leader also warned that Russia is actively pressuring countries to boycott the upcoming peace summit, with the help of China. Zelensky accused Russia of threatening countries with economic consequences in order to prevent their participation in the peace talks.
Zelensky expressed disappointment in China’s involvement in supporting Russian interests, stating that it is unfortunate for such a large and powerful country to be used as an instrument by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He noted that Russia’s aggressive tactics are aimed at disrupting the peace summit and preventing countries from participating in finding a resolution to the conflict.
Despite invitations extended to around 160 delegations, including members of the G20, G7, and BRICS, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin was not invited to the peace summit. While China and Brazil were invited, they are not expected to participate due to their alignment with Russian interests in the conflict.
