Ukraine has turned to unmanned boats as a key element in its defense against Russian aggression in the Black Sea. This tactic has proven highly effective, forcing Russia to reposition its forces and weaken its positions. In September 2023, an incident involving the Russian corvette Samum demonstrated the destructive power of Ukrainian unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). These USVs are not just used for surveillance or logistics but also for offensive actions.
Brigadier General Ivan Lukashevych, who leads Ukraine’s USV development program, claims that their strategies are unprecedented in the world. Ukraine has reportedly sunk or damaged over 20 Russian warships using these USVs. To counter Ukrainian attacks without large warships, missiles or a strong air force, Russia has had to spread its Black Sea Fleet forces across different bases in the region, allowing Ukrainian air defenses to better intercept missiles.
To stay ahead of Russian forces without resorting to conventional weapons, Ukraine is turning to unmanned technologies like USVs as a cost-effective strategy. The SBU and the Ukrainian Navy are working together to develop a fleet of 10-20 USVs with various functions that collectively match the capabilities of a conventional warship. They have even tested rocket launchers on USVs to attack ground targets.
Despite facing signal loss and interference issues, Ukrainian forces have successfully carried out numerous USV attacks against Russian warships and infrastructure in Sevastopol, Crimea. One of their main targets was the Crimean Bridge, which suffered significant damage from an attack by an Ukrainian USV. Ukraine has emerged as the first country to effectively use USVs in maritime warfare.
In response to this new threat, Russia has implemented various countermeasures such as deploying helicopters and drones to hunt down the USVs and creating their own version of USVs like Murena-300s to combat Ukrainian threats effectively. However, Ukrainian forces continue to adapt and develop new technologies like SeaBaby mine-laying USVs that maintain their offensive capabilities against Russia’s naval presence in the Black Sea.
