Ukraine’s Potential Attack on Russian-Controlled Bridge Raises Tensions with Moscow

Russia warns of severe retaliation in response to any Ukrainian attack on Crimean bridge: ‘Prepare yourselves!’

On May 1, the Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN posted images of different bridges on social media, with one labeled “Kerch” left blank, potentially indicating a target for destruction. This has raised concerns in Moscow that Ukraine may be planning to attack the bridge connecting Crimea to Russia. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Marija Zakharova, cited social media statements from Ukrainian and EU officials that suggested the bridge was a potential target.

These concerns are heightened as May 9 approaches, the day Russia commemorates victory over Nazi Germany in WWII, and Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. Zakharova warned of aggressive actions against Crimea, stating that any such attacks would be met with retaliation. She also mentioned statements by British officials implying support for using weapons against Russia, characterizing it as part of a larger hybrid war against Moscow.

The Russian government claims Crimea was mistakenly gifted to Ukraine in 1954 and now stations its Black Sea Fleet in the region. Zakharova’s statements reflect growing tensions between Russia and Western powers over the Crimean Bridge and potential military actions in the region.
