Ukraine Pioneers 5G Implementation: Launch of Test Mode Marks a Major Step Towards Global Technological Competitiveness

Ukraine has taken a major step towards the implementation of 5G technology with the launch of test mode at the Promprylad Innovation Center in Ivano-Frankivsk, Vodafone Office in Kyiv, and Nokia Office in Helsinki. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for Innovation, Education, Science, and Technology Development – Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov made the announcement on Telegram.

Fedorov highlighted that 5G is now being used in over 90 countries and that the European Union plans to cover all cities and main roads with 5G by 2025. Despite facing challenges such as a full-scale war, Ukraine is striving to develop innovations and keep pace with global technological advancements. Fedorov thanked Vodafone and Nokia for taking an important step towards the implementation of 5G and expressed hope for further technology scaling.

Vodafone and Nokia established the connection using pilot 5G indoor solutions at the Promprylad Innovation Center in Ivano-Frankivsk and the Vodafone Office in Kyiv. This marks the first platforms in Ukraine where individuals could experience 5G speed and modern technology capabilities using common smartphones and tablets with 5G support. The successful test has paved the way for further expansion of this cutting-edge technology throughout Ukraine.

On November 11, 2020, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved an action plan to implement the fifth-generation mobile communication system in the country. Additionally, on October 28, 2021, UNIT.City Innovation Park in Kyiv opened a new test communication zone called “5G Lab,” which aims to provide hands-on experience with this advanced technology for researchers, developers, and entrepreneurs alike.
