Ukraine: On the Brink of War, Zelensky Urges More Support from the International Community

Ukraine is in dire need of support from the international community as the recent Russian ground assault on the Kharkiv region has left it vulnerable to a potential larger offensive. President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected Paris’ proposal for an Olympic truce, fearing it would only play into Russia’s hands and be seen as another sign of the “absurd situation in which the West is afraid that Russia will lose the war.”

The Ukrainian president emphasized that his country needs over one hundred planes to counter Russian air power, but currently has only a quarter of the air defenses required. He also pointed out the need for more personnel in the army to fill up empty brigades and boost morale. In response to the escalating situation, a new mobilization law has been put in place to replenish Ukraine’s military ranks.

Zelensky criticized the West for prohibiting Ukraine from using weapons supplied by Europe and America to strike Russian territory. He expressed concerns about Russia bringing forces onto Ukrainian territory and rejected any idea of a truce during the Paris Olympics, fearing it would give Russia an opportunity to move troops and equipment.

The Ukrainian president believes that Donbass and Kharkiv are Russia’s main targets, with no major offensive on Kiev possible due to lack of forces. He suggested involving China in a peace conference in Ukraine to put pressure on Russia. The president highlighted global actors’ need to support Ukraine in ending this war.

In conclusion, Zelensky’s rejection of Paris’ proposal for an Olympic truce underscores his deep concern about Russia’s intentions towards Ukraine. The Ukrainian president believes that Moscow is planning another wave of attacks with Kharkiv being just the first wave. Therefore, he strongly believes that his country needs more planes and personnel in its army to counter Russian aggression effectively.
