Ukraine Denies Responsibility for Attack on Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant; IAEA Director Calls for Independent Verification of Parties Involved

Ukraine accused by Russia of attacking facility at Zaporizhya nuclear plant

The Russian-controlled Zaporizhya nuclear plant has been the center of controversy after Ukrainian drones attacked a non-nuclear facility at the plant on Wednesday, causing minimal damage. The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, stated that the agency would disclose the party responsible for the attacks on the Zaporizhya nuclear power plant if they could independently verify the information. Grossi emphasized the importance of confirming the source of the attacks and hoped that the station would not be targeted again.

Despite Russian claims that Ukrainian forces were responsible for attacking a non-nuclear facility at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Ukraine denied involvement in any such attack. In response to Russian accusations, Ukraine announced that its military had not carried out any attacks on Zaporizhzhia or Dniproenergo facilities. Furthermore, IAEA experts have been present at Zaporizhzhia since September 1st, 2022, following a visit by Director General Grossi to complete their mission.

Situated on the left bank of Dnieper River, Zaporizhzhia is Europe’s largest nuclear facility in terms of number of units and their capacities. With six energy units each capable of producing one gigawatt, it plays a vital role in providing power to its surrounding regions.
